It’s no secret that living a technology and social media obsessed life encourages instant gratification.
This is not good for your child.
Why? It teaches them to focus on the “now” by giving them instant rewards and short-term pleasure.
This can lead to the habit of expecting easy gains for very little meaningful effort. As an adult you know that anything worthwhile takes either time, money, or hard work.
It is commonly accepted that your child will do better in life if they learn to be in control of short-term temptations.
Teaching them to practice goal setting, use more self-discipline, self-control, and willpower will help, and martial arts is a great way to do this.
Here are some things that we do in our martial art classes that you can also do at home to help your child control technology use:
1. Help them to see the big picture
2. Help them to see the obstacles
3. Support them
4. Set clear boundaries
5. Create a reward system
We believe that technology is a very important part of your child’s development, but for their wellbeing, it must be used in moderation.
“The habits we practice on the mat are the habits we need for life!”
Self-defense is like driving a car.
Are you a defensive driver? Defensive drivers see the big picture when on the road. They are relaxed when driving, and are very aware of what’s happening to them, their vehicle, and the vehicles around them.
They calmly focus their attention where it is needed while keeping a clear view of their environment. They don’t under or over-react to things.
BUT…. sometimes learner drivers tend to be over-cautious until they become confident in their driving abilities. They are always looking for what could potentially happen and are sometimes blind to what is actually happening.
They are constantly over-reacting to what they see, and under-reacting to the things they don’t. The act of driving then becomes stressful for them, and their passengers! 😰
When it comes to self-defense, we don’t want to be like that beginner driver who is always on guard and looking for potential trouble. This creates unwanted stress in our mind.
We want to be like a confident, defensive driver. Always take in the big picture, be calm but aware, and trust your instincts and skills to keep you safe.

Michelle Ruiz is an entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker known for her inspirational messages. Her quote, “If people are doubting how far you can go, then go so far that you can’t hear them anymore,” is about perseverance and determination.
For martial arts students, this means that if others doubt your abilities or progress, push yourself beyond those doubts. Train harder, focus on your goals, and let your achievements silence any critics. Your dedication and hard work will speak louder than any doubts. Keep pushing your limits!
