Ten Things That Require Zero Talent

Some people make the mistake of believing that learning martial arts takes a great deal of talent!

In fact, we welcome beginners with no talent – those who feel they have 2 left feet, or feel awkward at any sports they try.
Why? Because Grandmaster Choi has developed Choi Kwang Do to be an art for everybody! You don’t have to be super fit or flexible to do it.

But as you know, learning martial arts isn’t just about physical coordination. It is also about personal development, and here are ten things that you can do that will make a small or maybe even a large difference to your life if practiced regularly….. even if you have zero talent! 😊

1. Being on time
2. Making an effort
3. Being High Energy
4. Having a positive attitude
5. Being passionate
6. Using good body language
7. Asking for feedback
8. Doing a little extra
9. Being prepared
10. Having a strong work ethic

Three Key Traits That Your Child Needs for Lifelong Success

As parents, our task is to equip our children with the tools they need to thrive in life.
We believe in fostering qualities that go beyond martial arts. Here are three essential traits that our young warriors learn through martial arts and are what we believe will be required to pave their way to success:

1️⃣ Commitment: In a world of instant gratification, teaching our children the value of commitment is crucial. Success isn’t an overnight phenomenon; it’s a mindset and a journey. When learning martial arts, your child learns that commitment means showing up, giving their best, and sticking to their goals, even when the going gets tough. This is a lesson that transcends the dojo and applies to every dream they chase.

2️⃣ Diligence: There’s no substitute for hard work. To succeed at martial arts, students must embrace the fact that that repetition is key to mastery. Whether it’s perfecting a technique or improving their fitness, students learn that success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

3️⃣ Patience: In our fast-paced world, patience is a virtue that often gets overlooked. Yet, it’s essential for long-term success. Through martial arts, students learn that patience is about embracing the journey, understanding that growth and skills take time to develop, and that every step forward is a victory.

Parents, your child will experience challenges in their martial arts training; We all hit training plateaus, come up against obstacles and challenges and experience times when motivation is low.

You can assist us by being supportive of your young warrior when things get difficult. Here are 3 things that will help:

1. Celebrate Achievements and Set Goals: Help them to see the big picture and the benefits that they are getting from doing martial arts. Help them to see how far they have come and highlight the skills they have learnt.

2. Show Active Interest: Attend their training sessions or practice with them, showing your support and understanding.

3. Inspire Them: Introduce them to martial arts role models or inspirational content to reignite their passion.

At the Academy of Choi Kwang Do, we’re not just teaching martial arts; we’re preparing our students for life. By instilling these three traits, we’re helping them build a foundation that will carry them through any challenge they face, anywhere life takes them.

What Do The Stripes On My Belt Mean? A Guide for Beginners

Starting martial arts can be exciting and somewhat overwhelming for beginners. One of the key aspects of progressing through the ranks involves understanding the system of stripes awarded by your instructor. These stripes, often seen on student’s belts are not ornamental. They signify a student’s readiness and competence in various aspects of their martial arts curriculum.

What are Stripes?
Stripes are black tips or bands added to the end of a belt. They are awarded during class, in the lead-up to a belt exam. Each stripe represents mastery in a specific area of the belt-level curriculum.
Earning these stripes is crucial, as they indicate that a student is ready to apply for a place in the upcoming belt exam.

The Meaning of the Stripes
1. Stripe 1 – Patterns: This stripe is awarded for demonstrating proficiency in patterns. Patterns, or forms, are a sequence of movements that represent a defensive and counter-attack combination. Patterns are fundamental in CKD, teaching students the flow and rhythm of techniques.
2. Stripe 2 – Offence Drill: Stripe 2 focuses on offensive skills. This involves learning and effectively executing the Offence Drill. To earn this stripe a student not only must memorise their offence drill but should be able to perform it fluidly and at speed.
3. Stripe 3 – Belt Level Techniques: The third stripe is all about mastering the specific techniques required for the student’s current belt level. This can include blocks, dodges, punches, kicks and strikes, depending on the belt level. To earn this stripe, the student must perform these techniques smoothly, with proper sequential flow, and be able to generate forceful impact.
4. Stripe 4 – Defence Drill: The final stripe is awarded for defensive drills. This involves demonstrating the ability to defend against attacks. The stripe is awarded for correct timing, blocking, evasion, and targeting of striking and kicking techniques during a defensive situation.

The Role of Stripes in Belt Exams
When a student earns all four stripes, it signifies their readiness for a belt promotion. The stripes ensure that students have a well-rounded understanding and skill set for their current belt level. They are also a way for instructors to assess a student’s progress.

When 4 stripes are awarded, this signifies that a student should register for a place in the next belt exam.

Remember, each stripe is a step forward in your martial arts journey, symbolizing growth, learning, and the pursuit of excellence.
