Preventing Digital Meltdowns – How to Ease Your Child Away From Their Screen Time.

As parents, one of the most significant challenges you might be facing today is managing your child’s screen time. The digital world offers incredible learning and entertainment opportunities, and let’s face it, the digital world is with us for good, and it’s crucial to find a balance for your child.

Did you know that there are national screentime guidelines for children and young people? https://aifs.gov.au/resources/short-articles/too-much-time-screens.

Avoiding the dreaded tech tantrums and digital meltdowns is a tough parenting challenge especially when you are fighting the big tech companies who seem to create more and more addictive on-line experiences to keep them glued to their screens.
Here are some strategies for your parenting tool-box:

1. Establishing Healthy Screen Time Habits:

It’s important to set clear rules and limits around screen usage. This includes designated screen-free times, especially during family activities, meals, and before bedtime. It is important to also prepare your child for the end of screen time. As adults we wouldn’t like being interrupted halfway through a movie and kids are no different, especially if the are playing a game. Using things like “when you finish that game, it will be time for bed” or “when you finish watching that show, it will be time for dinner” helps kids to understand how much screen time they have left.

2. Fostering Social Interaction and Physical Activity:

Excessive screen time can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and reduce face-to-face interactions. As parents, we can use your child’s online interests to create situations to transition from online to offline activities. i.e use screen time to inspire real life activities and physical play. As an example, if your child loves Bluey, then why not use this to play some Bluey inspired games such as Keepy-uppy or Musical Statues. Here’s a list of games that can get you going: https://www.romper.com/parenting/bluey-games

3. Encouraging Personal Growth Away from Screens:

While screens can offer educational content, nothing beats learning new skills in a hands-on environment. Replacing screen time with activities that are equally as fun and rewarding can help. Martial arts is one such activity and offers a holistic approach to a child’s physical, mental, and emotional development. Our classes at the Academy are tailored to children of all ages, providing a safe and supportive environment for them to grow and thrive. Plus, martial arts is just plain fun! The sport offers an exciting way to channel energy and creativity in a productive manner. www.academyckd.com.au

4. If you cannot beat them, join them!

While not a strategy for reducing screen time, sometimes we need to pick the battles that we can win and walk away from those we can’t. If your child is in one of those uncooperative moods, then why not join them in their online experience and use it as a way to have some quality time with them to enrich their lives. This is called co-viewing and gives parents a way to promote language, discuss life lessons, and build comprehension. Here are some articles for ideas: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/psychology/co-viewing

In Conclusion:

Balancing screen time is a challenge, but with the right activities and parental commitment to creating a structure life for kids, it’s certainly achievable. Martial arts present a perfect opportunity to engage your child in a fulfilling, healthy, and enjoyable activity that benefits their overall development. Why not give it a try and see the positive impact it can have on your child’s life?

Self Defence Tip: Use your Power Palms

Striking with your fists can cause you injuries, especially if your body isn’t conditioned by regular training.

If you need to defend yourself, a safer tool to use is the heel of your palm, especially if you are striking at an attacker’s bony head.

When applied to sensitive facial areas such as the chin, lower jaw, nose or lips you can create intense pain giving you the opportunity to escape. A palm strike should be delivered with a straight, forward thrusting motion with the hand flexed backwards and the fingers pointing upward, in a similar method to giving a ‘high five’. For maximum impact, the strike should be driven with the momentum of your whole body.

Remember that self-defense is more than just learning the tools and methods to stop an attacker. Self-defence begins with you using your awareness to prevent an attack.

Stay aware and stay safe.

Parting Thought: "Curiosity can empower you or impede you."

Being curious and focused is a powerful combination. I define this combination as unleashing your curiosity within the domain of a particular task: asking questions about how things work, exploring different lines of attack for solving the problem, reading ideas from outside domains while always looking for ways to transfer the knowledge back to your main task, and so on.

Even though you’re exploring widely, you’re generally moving the ball forward on the main thing. You start something and you keep searching until you find an effective way to finish it.

Meanwhile, when your curiosity sends you off in a dozen different directions and fractures your attention, then it can prevent you from focusing on one thing long enough to see it through to completion. Curious, but unfocused. You’re jumping from one topic to the next, they aren’t necessarily related, your efforts don’t accumulate, you’re simply exploring. You start many things and finish few.

How is your curiosity being directed?
Is it rocket fuel or a roadblock?”
