As parents, we often look for ways to positively influence our children’s growth and resilience. Today, I’d like to share a simple yet powerful technique we use in our martial arts school that can be easily applied at home. It’s not just for teaching martial arts; it’s about instilling confidence and a can-do attitude in kids.
Imagine your child comes to you feeling a bit discouraged, perhaps saying they’re too tired to do their homework or a chore. Instead of sympathizing with their sense of limitation, try this approach: Highlight their strength in the face of challenges. For example, if they say, “I’m too tired to clean my room,” respond with, “That’s what I like about you! You can tidy up your room even when you’re feeling tired.”
Here’s why this approach is so effective:
1. Reframing Self-Perception: This method helps your child think about themselves differently. You’re introducing positive affirmations that they can internalize and recall later.
2. Turning Challenges into Opportunities: Rather than expressing disappointment, you transform the situation into a motivational challenge. It teaches them that obstacles don’t define their capabilities.
3. Cultivating Self-Motivation: This positive reinforcement encourages them to think proactively. They start to recognize their own potential and capabilities, even in moments of self-doubt.
So next time your child faces a hurdle, whether they are feeling unmotivated or dealing with a minor setback, remember to boost their confidence. Let them know, “That’s what I like about you!” This simple phrase can work wonders in building their self-esteem and resilience.
As a martial arts instructor, I’ve seen incredible changes using this simple technique. It’s amazing how a shift in perspective can empower children to overcome and succeed, not just in martial arts, but in all aspects of life. Give it a try parents!
For you and your kids.

“How you do one thing is how you do everything” suggests that our approach to small tasks, like practicing a martial arts move, reflects our overall attitude and behavior in life.
A martial artist’s discipline, attention to detail, and perseverance in training often parallel how they approach challenges and interact with others in other areas of their life.
It is much easier to handle things that life throws at us when we have consistency in our character and attitudes regardless of the situation that we find ourselves in.
