The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make by Sean Covey

Here’s a great book for your teenager: The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make by Sean Covey

This is a must read for your teenager. It should also be on your reading list as well as a parent.

Let’s face it… the challenges teens face today are tough: academic stress, parent communication, media bombardments, dating drama, abuse, bullying, addictions, depression, and negative peer pressure, just to name a few.

And the choices teens make while navigating these challenges could make or break their futures.

This book will help them to make the smart choices that will help them to succeed as a teen and set them up with the right attitudes for adulthood.

I know, you may be thinking that with the way technology is, it may be a challenge to get your teen to sit with a book and read it for more than 5 minutes, but if they can, I promise that they will be well rewarded.

Self Defence Tip - Hit the Pause Button

Being a Black Belt has in the past attracted jokes from my friends.

The jokes have centered around Black belts being lethal weapons who possess superhuman skills to defend themselves…..

“I bet you could do some Origami and fold somebody in half before they knew what was happening!”
or
“All you need to do is snap kick my knees and I will be history!”

While fast reactions can give you an advantage, you will have better success at self-defence if you can slow a bad situation down.

A better response to an emotionally aggressive situation is to “hit the pause button”

It is sometimes our emotions that get us deeper into trouble, and if you can control them when things are heated, then you have a greater chance of controlling the situation, and also the aggressor

When you are emotionally in control:

• You can think clearly
• You are less impulsive
• You can talk your way out
• You are ready to react

Here are some tips to diffuse a violent situation:

• Breathe – control your anger
• Speak in a calm voice – don’t get dragged into the aggression
• Use appropriate words that do not aggravate. Telling them to “calm down” could aggravate things further!
• Use reasoning or acknowledge the problem
• Use the person’s name if you know it
• Use silence – letting them have their say can diffuse the aggressor’s emotions

The bottom line is that when you are in control of your emotions, you are mentally stronger than the aggressor, and have a better chance of controlling the outcome.

Hit the pause button and stay safe!

Real Martial Artists Don't pick their noses!!!

This is a true story that will make you smile. 😃

A short while ago while talking about self-control with our Tiny Tiger martial arts (3-5yr olds) group the conversation went like this…

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿: 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘴?

𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝟭: 𝘉𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘶𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘢𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿: 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴?

𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝟮: 𝘉𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 “𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘮” 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿: 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘰!

𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝟯: 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰!

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿: (𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥) 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵?

𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝟯: (𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺) 𝘉𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵! 🤣🤣🤣

Priceless moment!!! Needless to say that this raised a few chuckles and smiles from the parents watching the class.

The fact is the kids were engaged in the lesson, actively contributing, and helping their peers to learn from their experiences. 👦🏻👧🏼

This is the power of our class mat chats.

💁🏻‍♂️ We reinforce the same lessons that you as a parent teach at home that will help your child to be successful in life.✨

How do I know if I'm ready for my belt exam?

Preparing for a belt exam is an exciting part of your martial arts journey. Here’s how to know if you’re ready:

  • Consistent Practice: Ensure you have attended a minimum of 16 classes over at least 2 months.
  • Mastery of Techniques: Confidently perform all required techniques and patterns.
  • Stripes on Belt: You should have earned four stripes through our in-class exam pre-tests (Stripe Testing).
  • Instructor’s Feedback: You are applying the feedback that your instructor has given you in class.
  • Physical and Mental Readiness: Feel physically fit and mentally prepared for the challenge.

Note that this only applies to students in our CKD program. Tiny Tiger students on the other hand have a different process for their belt exams.

Tiny Tigers are ready to attend their belt exams when they have:

  • Consistent Attendance: Regular attendance ensures that they enter the exam with a confident mindset
  • Focus and Self Control: In a belt exam, Tiny Tigers will need to listen and focus to do well.

Meeting these criteria means you’re likely ready to take the next step to register for your belt exam. Registration is done on a web page and notices are given in class, by email, and on our Member App. Good luck!

Parting Thought: If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse – Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn’s quote, “If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse,” perfectly applies to martial arts training. In martial arts, determination and commitment are crucial. If you truly aspire to master a technique, improve your skills, or earn a new belt, you’ll put in the necessary effort, find time for practice, and overcome obstacles. Conversely, if your heart isn’t in it, you’ll likely make excuses and avoid the difficulty. Martial arts teach us that dedication paves the way to success, while excuses lead to stagnation.
