Why Martial Arts Might Be the Best Thing You Can Do for Your Mind

At The Academy of Choi Kwang Do, we’ve always believed that martial arts isn’t just about kicks and punches—it’s about keeping your body and your brain healthy at every age. Now, science is backing that up.

Here’s an article from the Winter 2025 edition of the RACQ Road Ahead magazine that we found very interesting:

Queensland researchers from The University of Queensland’s Brain Institute recently uncovered something remarkable: high-intensity exercise can improve brain function in older adults—and those improvements can last for years.

Led by Professor Perry Bartlett and Dr Daniel Blackmore, the study followed 150 older adults (aged 65 to 85) who were divided into three exercise groups—low, moderate, and high intensity. Over six months, participants trained three times per week and were carefully monitored with brain scans and cognitive tests.

The results? The high-intensity group didn’t just slow cognitive decline—they showed real improvements in memory and learning. These gains were found in the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Even better, the cognitive improvements were still present five years later.

As Professor Bartlett said,

“This old idea that there’s nothing but a downhill slope as you get older is wrong. Clearly, you can change the trajectory and improve cognition, even in an older population.”

This is exciting news for all of us—because it shows that staying active, especially with structured and stimulating movement like martial arts, can literally change the way your brain ages.

At The Academy, our adult and seniors classes provide the kind of training that supports brain health:

  • Engaging movement patterns that challenge coordination

  • Short bursts of high-effort activity to raise heart rate

  • Focus, memory, and reaction drills to activate the brain

  • A supportive community that encourages consistency and connection

The best part? You don’t need to be an athlete to start. Our programs are designed for all fitness levels, and we always encourage students to move at their own pace. We’re here to help you train smart, stay safe, and feel great.

So whether you’re in your 30s, 50s, or 70s—it’s never too late to boost your brain and improve your wellbeing.

Self Defence Tip - Attract Attention

If attacked it is important to let everyone around you know what is going on.

Also, parents, make sure your kids know that it is acceptable to make lots of noise if somebody is threatening or hurting them.

Not only should they use a strong voice to negotiate their way out, they should also shout, yell for help or scream.

The idea is to deter the attacker or bully by attracting attention to the situation.

This tactic is extremely important if your child is being attacked by a stranger during an attempted abduction.

Being quiet and submissive is never a good idea.

It is better to show the attacker that they have chosen a difficult target and it is not worth the trouble to persist.

Discipline is Freedom: Mastering the Art of Consistency

July 2025 Newsletter - The Academy of CKD

When most people hear the word “discipline,” they think of restriction. They imagine rules, limitations, and a life without spontaneity or joy. But here’s the truth: discipline doesn’t confine us—it frees us. It’s the key to unlocking our potential, creating meaningful progress, and living a life of purpose. And as martial artists, we should undestand this better than anyone.

Ryan Holiday, in his book Discipline is Destiny, draws from the wisdom of the Stoics to remind us that self-discipline is not about punishment—it’s about empowerment. The Stoics believed that by mastering ourselves—our impulses, distractions, and desires—we gain control over our lives. We stop being reactive and start living intentionally. This mindset is at the heart of martial arts practice. Every time we step onto the mat, we’re not just training our bodies, we’re training our minds to focus, to persevere, and to stay committed to the path we’ve chosen.

Let’s bring this idea into the modern world. I heard recently that the average American adult spends around three hours a day consuming social media? That’s 21 hours a week—nearly a full day—lost to scrolling, liking, and watching!  Imagine what they could do with that time. It could be time spent learning a new skill, spent as quality time with loved ones, or creatiing something meaningful. Instead of time being spent as a passive consumer, it could be spent as an active creator.

To be honest, I realised this and made a decision a while back to limit my social media use as much as I could. At first, it felt like I was cutting something out of my life, and that was when I realised that it was like an addiction. What I quickly realized was that I wasn’t losing anything—I was gaining freedom. Freedom to focus on what truly matters. Freedom to invest my time in things that bring me joy and fulfillment, like hobbies, reading, and learning. That one act of discipline opened up a world of possibilities.

This is the strange thing about discipline: by setting boundaries, we enhance our lives. By saying “no” to distractions, we say “yes” to growth. And in martial arts, this principle is everywhere. The discipline to show up for class, to practice the basics, to push through challenges—these are the very things that lead to mastery. They give us the freedom to move with ease and confidence, to defend ourselves, and to live with strength and purpose.

So here’s my challenge to you: take a hard look at where your time is going. Are there areas where a little more discipline could create extra freedom? Maybe it’s limiting social media, committing to spending more quality time with loved ones, or simply being more intentional with your day. Whatever it is, remember this: discipline isn’t about what you’re giving up—it’s about what you’re gaining.

Let’s live like the Stoics. Let’s train like martial artists. Let’s embrace discipline as the ultimate path to freedom. Because when we master the art of consistency, we don’t just improve our practice—we transform our lives.

Parting Thought: "You’ll always feel out of balance if you’re not living in alignment with what you truly desire. Balance begins when your actions reflect your values and your heart’s priorities….Brendan Burchard

In training, we don’t just punch and kick—we learn to align our actions with our values: discipline, respect, perseverance, and self-improvement.

When your daily habits in and out of the dojo reflect what truly matters to you—whether it’s becoming healthier, gaining confidence, or living with integrity—you begin to feel a deeper sense of balance.

Martial arts helps you discover what’s important, and gives you the tools to live in alignment with those priorities.

True balance isn’t about having a perfect schedule—it’s about living with purpose, both on and off the mat.
