June Newsletter

This week during kids’ circle time, one student randomly asked:  “Mr V… how old are you?”

What followed was a rapid-fire guessing game that became increasingly generous.
One child guessed 27. Another guessed 31. At that point, I considered ending class early while I was ahead.

The real surprise came when they found out I’m much closer to their grandparents’ age than they expected — and it opened up a conversation about one of the 3 pillars of Choi Kwang Do – Optimum Health.

One of the main reasons Grandmaster Choi developed CKD was for quality of life through proper movement and exercise.

3 IDEAS

  1. Age changes us. Inactivity changes us faster.
One of Grand Master Choi’s teachings is thatthe body adapts to whatever we repeatedly do — including doing very little. Most people don’t suddenly become “old” overnight. They slowly stop moving, stop challenging themselves, and start accepting stiffness, low energy, and fatigue as normal.
  2. Staying active is less about looking young and more about staying capable.
Quality aging is being able to get up off the floor easily, carry groceries without strain, play with your kids or grandkids, and move without pain — that’s real quality of life. Training reminds us that movement is something we should protect, not take for granted.
  3. The habits we build today become the life we live later.
Youdon’t reach your later years and suddenly decide to become healthy and mobile. The future is usually built from small daily choices repeated over time. A little movement every day may not feel important now, but years later it becomes everything.
    Motion keeps life open.

2 QUOTES

“We do not stop exercising because we grow old — we grow old because we stop exercising.”
— Attributed to Dr Kenneth Cooper

“Choi Kwang Do will add years to your life and life to your years”
— Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi

1 QUESTION

What are the small habits you’re practising today that your future self will either thank you for… or struggle because of?

You will fail but that's okay

I’ve been bullied throughout life… and I’m sure most people have too.

I’ve failed at a lot of things… and I’m sure you have to.

I’ve made lots of mistakes, especially growing up as a child… and I’m sure most people have too.

I’ve made a lot of choices that some people don’t agree with… and I’m sure you have too.

But please remember that bullies, failures, mistakes, and adversity don’t define you.

You are defined by how you carry yourself through these challenges, and I hope you believe me when I say you are MUCH stronger and smarter than you think you are!

Parting Thought: “The world belongs to the energetic”, Ralph Waldo Emerson.

June 2026 Newsletter - The Academy of CKD

Success tends to favor those who bring energy, enthusiasm, and consistent effort to what they do.

It’s not just about talent or opportunity it’s about showing up with intent, staying active, and putting your energy into meaningful action.

In martial arts, this means training with focus, pushing yourself even when you’re tired, and bringing a positive attitude to every class.

Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us that those who invest their energy wisely create progress and open doors for themselves.

When you treat martial arts as a lifestyle, you learn to channel your energy into growth, discipline, and purpose, which helps you move forward not just in training, but in life as well.
