It’s a term coined by renowned statistician and distinguished University Professor at NYU, Nassim Taleb.
He also wrote the book (which I highly recommend), Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder. In it, Nassim mentions that:
Antifragility is beyond resilience. Resilient people resist shocks and stay the same; Antifragile people get better.
This means that pain can make you stronger….if you treat it with more than just resilience.
Why?
Because all resilience really is, is the ability to endure pain…. to tough it out.
But when you’re antifragile, you get stronger and tougher because of it.
Exercise is a perfect analogy. When your body feels “the burn,” it recognises the feeling as a growth signal. The exercise damages muscle tissue, and your body rebuilds it back into a sturdier state.
This makes the phrase “Pain is weakness leaving your body” very true!
We believe that to get the most out of life, to become the best version of ourselves, we need more than resilience.
We need to be antifragile.
We need to re-frame the pain, stress, chaos or disorder of an experience.
We need to not see it as something that we endure, but as a positive thing that gives us the opportunity to learn, improve, and grow.
This is one of our Choi Kwang Do Life Principles – UNBREAKABLE SPIRIT
This is why we should see every challenge as an opportunity.
This is the way of the martial artist!
Many bullied kids suffer bullying in silence.
They make one common mistake: not recording or reporting anything.
Some kids may feel that it is a sign of weakness if they ask for help.
The best thing you can do is to let your child know that they are not alone if they are bullied.
Also let them know that asking for help can be very difficult, but the bravest person is not the one who suffers in silence. It is the person who speaks up and asks for help.
When your child asks for help, collect evidence. When bullying is recorded, something can be done about it by the authorities.
The following should be recorded as soon as possible after every incident:
When you are prepared with documented facts, details and a timeline, then this will make it so much easier to put your case forward to the authorities.

Walt Disney’s quote beautifully captures the transformative power of adversity. It suggests that challenges, while often painful in the moment, are not just obstacles but opportunities for personal growth. This perspective encourages us to embrace our struggles, understanding that each difficulty can strengthen and prepare us for future challenges. Much like the rigorous training in martial arts, every hardship is a chance to develop resilience and tenacity, turning setbacks into stepping stones towards greater achievements. Embracing this mindset can transform how we view our battles, seeing them not as impediments but as invaluable lessons that shape who we are.
