Try This Digital Detox and Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Let’s be honest now…how often do you find yourself scrolling on your phone at bedtime? Sure, it may be a way to wind down from a busy day, but the trouble is that it keeps our mind engaged with information and stimulation.

Also, the light from your phone screen is an artificial colour that mimics daylight. This can be great during the day, but it’s just the opposite of what you need at night when you’re winding down and ready to hit the hay.

Why not try swapping your scrolling time with some true wind down time: A basic martial arts stretch routine just before bedtime is a great way to finish the day off.

You may just enjoy better sleep and wake up more energized. Swap endless late-night scrolling with stretches for better rest, vitality, and easier mobility.

Self Defence Tip: Learn Verbal Martial Arts

You may not always have to defend yourself from physical attack.

You can also experience emotional and mental abuse.

Maybe it is a bullying boss, a jealous work colleague, a rude neighbor.

The physical lessons we learn in our martial arts training can be applied to these types of attackers.

Think about it…..

You learn to block and deflect punches and kicks, so why not practice verbal responses to deflect unwanted comments?

You learn to counter-attack quickly when someone attacks us, so be ready to talk the situation down and diffuse any verbal aggression.

You practice physical defence moves repeatedly to respond to common attacks, so why not apply this idea to verbal responses too?

So, if you have somebody giving you a hard time, give yourself some mental training.

Role-play and rehearse just like your physical training on the martial arts mat to give you the confidence.

“The habits we practice on the mat are the habits we need for life”

Tips to Get More Out of Your Training

Welcome to our CKD martial arts community! As you begin your journey, I would like to set you up with some simple strategies to enhance your training experience and see overall progress. Here are some key tips that have worked for other students:

Consistent Practice: The cornerstone of martial arts mastery lies in consistent practice. Attend classes regularly and dedicate time outside the dojo to refine your techniques. Consistency not only improves your skills but also builds self-discipline, a vital component of martial arts.

Mindful Training: Approach each training session with mindfulness. Being present and focused allows you to absorb techniques more effectively and understand the nuances of movements. This attentiveness can lead to faster improvements and a deeper appreciation of the art.

Ask Questions: Never hesitate to ask your instructors questions. Engaging like this shows your eagerness to learn and opens up avenues for deeper insights. Remember, there are no silly questions in the journey of learning martial arts.

Practice Patience: Patience is your ally. Mastery does not happen overnight; it’s a result of persistent effort and patience. Celebrate small victories and understand that every master was once a beginner.

Focus on Technique: In martial arts, technique is king. Prioritize precision and form over speed or power, especially in the beginning. A solid foundation in the basics will pave the way for advanced techniques and effective self-defense.

Embrace the Community: You’re part of a martial arts family now. Engage with your fellow students, help them as you were helped, attend events, and support each other. This camaraderie not only makes training more enjoyable but also fosters a supportive environment for everyone.

Reflect on Progress: Keep a training journal to document your journey. Note down techniques learned, challenges faced, and personal achievements. Reflecting on your progress will motivate you and help pinpoint areas for improvement.

Embarking on your martial arts journey with these tips in mind will not only enhance your physical and technical abilities but also enrich your experience, making every step of your journey rewarding. Remember, the path to mastery is a marathon, not a sprint. Enjoy every moment of your training, and welcome to the world of martial arts!

A funny thing happened on the mat!

You are going to laugh at this…. As an instructor the kids are forever keeping me on my toes.

This week I played a quick activity with our 6 to 9 yr old class to help them to focus. I called “Run and touch something blue” and they did. After going through some colours I started getting creative… “run and touch something soft” A few creative kids didn’t run at all, choosing to touch the padded training floor, or their hair.

Spying our class mirrors I called “Touch something hard and shiny!” I was surprised when a few ran to me! I heard the laughter from our parents on the sidelines as the kids wanted me to bend over so they could touch my balding head :-)!!

Parting Thought: "Stop paying so much attention to what everyone else is doing and run your own race”

How much time is spent reading other people’s posts on social media, watching other people’s exploits in the news, listening to other people’s ideas on podcasts?

Go have coffee with a friend. Go make something. Go outside.

All those hours spent looking at someone else’s life on a screen could be used to take action in your own life.” James Clear, Author of Atomic Habits

We couldn’t agree more – Life is too short to be spent wasted away in front of a screen.
Go do something for yourself….today!
