Here’s Some Great Advice: Always Make Your Bed

In his book, Make your Bed by retired US Navy Admiral William H. McRaven, the author writes about how making their bed as part of their military training has an important life lesson.

He describes it as a simple, boring task that had to be done to perfection.

After having completed this small task with satisfaction, it encourages soldiers to do another small task to perfection, then another, and another. The message is that “small habits can bring big results”

In other words, if you can’t do the small mundane things well, then how can you do important things that matter well? Martial arts training teaches this important aspect.

By focusing our minds on achieving the perfect punch, the perfect kick, or the perfect defence then we are developing the same mindset that is required to be a high achiever.

This mindset reflects your self-discipline, pride and personal habits.

And this mindset most certainly spills over into everyday life, and is why we see kids school grades improve, and adults achieve their goals.

So the message from William H. McRaven is that if you want to change the world, or just make yourself a little better, then start by making your bed.

“The habits we learn on the mat are the habits we need for life”

Fight Like a Hummingbird

Did you know that the hummingbird is only 30 minutes away from death?

It’s energy consumption is so high when flying that it needs to eat within 30 minutes or else it won’t be able to fly to feed itself!

Because of this, hummingbirds are very territorial and are incredibly aggressive to competitors that threaten their food source.

This all or nothing approach is the exact same mindset that you need when it comes to self-defence.

It is common that, when people are attacked, the aggressor believes that they are more powerful or has an advantage over their victim.

As a victim, you need to demonstrate to the attacker that you are not worth the trouble, that there are easier targets and create an element of surprise to throw them off their game.

This is not about your size and strength. Like the hummingbird, combining accurate and well-placed blows with an all or nothing mindset will give you the momentary advantage to escape.

Remember that you must not make yourself a target in the first place, but if you are attacked, fight like a hummingbird!

The Meaning of Pil Seung

Pil Seung!

You may have heard or seen these words in our Dojang. You would have heard them said by another student or instructor as a greeting to another, and it is what we say whenever we bow to each other and at the start of class and training drills.

You also say it as you step onto the mats at the beginning of every training session and as you are leaving the Dojang to face other challenges, but what do these words mean?

Why do we say Pil Seung? And why does carry such an importance with Korean martial arts?

The Translation of Pil Seung is this:

Pil Seung translates to ‘certain victory’ as a single phrase. Pil Seung is derived from an ancient Korean saying:

“Jung Shin, Il Do, Ha Sang, Pil Seung”

This loosely translates to “With a concentrated mind (one mind), you will have certain victory” or in other words “Nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it”

Hen we say “Pil Seung” we are reminding ourselves that; “With one mind I will achieve certain victory”

Philosophy

The Philosophy of Pil Seung was first introduced into Taekwondo and has followed in many other Korean martial arts including Choi Kwang Do.

Pil Sung is a statement of dedication, commitment, and striving for a better way of life. When we say these words, we remind ourselves that we will face all of life’s challenges and difficulties with the confidence and resolve that we will prevail over those challenges.

“Pil Seung” = “I am confident of certain victory”

It is important to note that “Pil Seung” is not a threat of violence, dominance, or arrogance in any way. It is not directed at anyone else and only has meaning for the person who utters these words. It is a form of confidence that is practiced and developed on your martial art journey.

Parting Thought: "Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’" — Mary Anne Radmacher

This quote emphasizes that courage doesn’t always manifest as bold or loud actions. It often appears as resilience and quiet determination, especially in moments of doubt or failure.

When courage whispers that quiet encouragement to keep going and try again tomorrow, it reflects an inner strength that is just as powerful as any loud declaration of bravery. It’s about the perseverance to continue despite setbacks.

Courage can also be subtle yet profoundly impactful.
