Most people think mental wellbeing comes from avoiding stress… but maybe that’s not how it works.
It is very true that pressure is part of life. But I think that the real question is how you come back from it.
Three thoughts:
1. Mental wellbeing isn’t built by avoiding pressure….it’s built by how you recover from it. Stress comes and goes, but your habits around rest, reflection, and reset determine whether it strengthens you or drains you. The goal isn’t a calm life, it’s a stable mind within it.
In training, we sometimes see this: Two students face the same pressure. One tightens up, the other resets and continues. The difference isn’t the situation. It’s the recovery.
2. Most people try to control their thoughts, but a better place to start is noticing them. When you create a small gap between what you think and how you react, you regain choice. In training, that pause is the difference between reacting wildly and moving with intent.
Not perfect. Just aware.
3. You don’t need to fix everything at once to feel better. Often, improving one small area such as sleep, movement, or how you speak to yourself creates momentum that spills into the rest. Progress in mental wellbeing is quiet and steady, not dramatic. Small wins compound.
This is the kind of person you become when you train consistency over intensity.
Two Quotes:
“Feelings are much like waves. We can’t stop them from coming, but we can choose which ones to surf.” ….Jonatan Mårtensson
“Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.” …. William S. Burroughs
One question for you: “What is one habit or thought pattern you know that affects your mental wellbeing, and what would it look like to respond to it differently this week”?
My belief: “A small change, repeated, can shift more than you expect.”
Regards,
Master John
Conflict is a normal part of growing up. Whether it’s at school, on the playground, or at home, children will face challenging situations.
But when conflict turns into bullying, it can affect confidence, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing.
That’s why it’s important to teach kids not just self-defence—but how to talk their way out of trouble.
Simple Negotiation Tips
The “Agree to Disarm” Technique
This is one of the most effective ways to defuse a situation.
Instead of arguing or reacting, your child gives a calm, neutral response like:
This removes the reaction the other person is looking for.
No reaction = no fuel = the situation loses momentum.
Why It Works
Most bullying escalates because of back-and-forth reactions.
“Agree to Disarm” helps your child:
It’s not about giving in—it’s about handling the situation smartly.

Your commitment to training is what makes our community strong. We’re proud of you.
Thank you so much for your review!
What seems impossible at first is often just something that hasn’t been worked on long enough with enough commitment.
The gap between “I can’t do this” and “I can do this” is usually filled with persistence, effort, and the decision not to give up.
In martial arts, this shows up every time you struggle with a technique, feel challenged in class, or doubt your progress but choose to keep going anyway.
Tommy Lasorda reminds us that determination is what turns potential into reality.
When you treat martial arts as a lifestyle, you build that determination daily, and over time, things that once felt impossible become part of who you are.
