The Ripple Effect of Martial Arts

Pil Seung!

I just want to write about something that’s been on my mind lately: The ripple effect of training in martial arts. It is the idea that every action we take, every decision we make, sends out waves that touch the people around us.

It’s such a very powerful concept once we realise it, and I want you to really feel how much your martial arts training matters not just for you, but for everyone in your life.

Think about this: every time you step onto the mat, every time you push yourself to learn a new skill, every time you show up even when it’s hard, you’re not just changing yourself. You’re creating ripples that inspire and influence the people around you…that is: your family, your friends, your teammates, even people you don’t realize who are watching your progress.

I’ll share a quick story with you. Years ago, when I first started teaching martial arts, I thought it was all about helping students get stronger, faster, more skilled. And of course, that’s part of it.

But then I started noticing something incredible. Parents would come up to me after class and say, “You know, my son is more confident at school now,” or “My daughter stood up for herself for the first time.” I’d hear stories about students who started eating healthier, working harder in school, or even just smiling more because they are getting more out of life.

That’s when it hit me: the work we do here on the training mat isn’t just about kicks and punches. It’s about creating better humans. And when you grow as a person, you are a role model and show others that they can grow too.

The magic is this: your growth is contagious. When you show discipline, your kids notice. When you handle challenges gracefully, your coworkers feel it. When you encourage someone in class, you create a culture of support. You might not even realise it, but because you are training in martial arts, you’re actually planting seeds of inspiration everywhere you go.

So, let me ask you: who’s watching you right now? Who’s being influenced by the way you act, handle difficult things or show up? Maybe it’s your kids, your spouse, your teammates, or even someone you’ve never met who sees you from across the room.

And here’s my challenge for you: How can you make those ripples even bigger? What’s one small action you can take this week to inspire someone else? Maybe it’s sharing your progress with a friend, encouraging a teammate, or simply showing gratitude to someone who’s helped you.

Remember, every time you train, you’re not just changing your life….you’re changing the lives of everyone around you. That’s the magic of the ripple effect.

So keep going. Keep showing up to class. Keep growing. The world needs your ripples. Let’s make it happen together.

Train hard, train with integrity.

Mr V.

Bully Defence Tip - Awareness and Assessment

Some bullying situations are more of an annoyance, others can be dangerous, while worse still, some can be life threatening.

Parents, we need our kids to be aware of the severity of a bullying situation, and to act appropriately.

A mild bullying incident may just be verbal or light physical contact with name calling, teasing, harassment, pushing etc. The answer here is to leave, record and report.

A dangerous incident may involve multiple bullies and where physical violence could eventuate. This may be a gang of bullies waiting for your child at the school gates. Teach your child avoidance strategies, and to seek help from an adult.

Life threatening situations could arise with multiple attackers in an environment where there is no help from friends or adults, and may even involve weapons.

Getting beaten up in the toilets, in a back alley or the use of knives puts your child in serious danger. The priority here is escape at any cost!

Also, the number one thing your child must do in any of these situations is to report the incident to you and their teachers.

Mastering the Basics: Why Foundational Skills Matter for Your Child’s Martial Arts Success

September 2025 Newsletter - The Academy of CKD

Hey parents,

I know how much you want your child to succeed…not just in martial arts, but in life. You want them to feel confident, capable, and proud of what they’re accomplishing. And let me tell you, you’re in the right place, because martial arts is one of the best ways to help your child build those qualities.

But here’s the thing: success in martial arts (and in life) doesn’t come from trying to be perfect right out of the gate. It comes from mastering the basics.

Let me explain.

When your child steps onto the mat for the first time, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea of them learning flashy moves or earning their next belt as quickly as possible. But the truth is, the most important thing they can do right now is focus on the foundational skills. Things like proper stances, basic punches, and simple blocks. These might not seem exciting at first, but they’re the building blocks of everything they’ll achieve in martial arts.

Think of it like building a house. If the foundation isn’t solid, the whole structure is shaky. But when the foundation is strong, you can build something incredible on top of it. That’s exactly what we’re doing here at The Academy: Helping your child build a rock-solid foundation that will support their growth for years to come.

And the magic of it all: as your child practices these basics, something amazing starts to happen. They begin to feel more confident. They start to see that they can learn new things, that they can improve with effort, and that they can overcome challenges. That confidence doesn’t just stay on the mat. It spills over into every area of their life.

But we must be real about all this. Mastering the basics takes time. It takes patience. And sometimes, it takes a little encouragement from you. So here’s how you can help:

  1. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection: When your child nails their first stance or throws a solid punch, celebrate it! Let them know you’re proud of their effort, not just the outcome.
  2. Encourage Consistency: Remind them that showing up and practicing regularly is the key to improvement. Even small steps forward add up over time.
  3. Be Patient: Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Trust the process and remind your child that every great martial artist started exactly where they are now.
  4. Focus on Effort: Help them see that trying their best is what matters most. Effort is what leads to mastery, not natural talent or perfection.

At the end of the day, martial arts isn’t just about learning techniques. It’s about building character. And when your child learns to master the basics, they’re not just becoming better martial artists, they’re becoming stronger, more confident, and more resilient individuals.

So, let’s cheer them on as they take those first steps. Let’s remind them that every black belt was once a beginner, and that mastering the basics is the first step toward greatness.

You’ve got an amazing journey ahead, and I’m so excited to be a part of it with you and your child. Let’s keep building that foundation together!

Parting Thought: “You don’t have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you.” — Dan Millman (Author of "Way of the Peaceful Warrior")

The real battle often takes place in the mind. As part of the martial arts lifestyle, we train not only our bodies but also our minds to remain calm, focused, and present.

It’s normal to have self-doubt, fear, or distractions arise but the goal is not to force those thoughts away or pretend they don’t exist.

Instead, we learn through regular practice to observe them without letting them dictate our actions.

Whether you’re on the mat or facing a challenge in everyday life, your thoughts don’t have to run the show.

Martial arts teaches you to breathe, stay grounded, and respond with clarity and purpose that’s how you become the master of your own mind.
