John Glenn, the first American astronaut in space, was trained by NASA to handle all kinds of problems on his mission. One of the most crucial skills he learned was how to manage stress.
Imagine being at the controls of a spacecraft and making a mistake because of stress or panic. One wrong button, misreading an instrument, or acting too quickly could mean life or death.
When people panic, they mess up, ignore procedures, and don’t think clearly. They react to the survival hormones flooding their veins.
John Glenn did something incredible. He spent nearly a day in space, keeping his heart rate under 100 beats per minute. He wasn’t just sitting there—he was in full control of his emotions, thanks to his astronaut training.
In self-defense, it’s not just about how good a fighter you are, but how well you can keep your emotions in check, especially the urge to panic. This is what keeps you safe.
Training in martial arts exposes you to physical challenges in a safe, controlled way, helping you get used to stress triggers and teaches you how to stay calm under pressure.
The benefits go beyond self-defense. Whether it’s bad news, public speaking, or facing a challenge at work, staying calm helps you think clearly, find solutions, and stick to your plan.
We might not get astronaut training, but martial arts is within everyone’s reach. Why not give it a try?
Not every self-defense moment needs physical action. Sometimes, words are the weapon being used against you, and handling them calmly can prevent a situation from escalating. A simple but powerful tactic is to just agree with the aggressor.
Getting insults? Don’t take it personally – Stay calm and agree.
Facing an argument? Keep it cool, don’t get pulled into the disagreement, agree, and walk away.
Road rage? Acknowledge that a mistake has been made, apologise, and move on.
Dealing with an upset customer? Agree that a mistake has been made and offer to make amends.
By agreeing, you take control of the situation, de-escalating potential conflicts before they turn physical. Once the agressor realises that there is no fight in you, then they have nothing to fight against!
And of course, always prioritisze your safety—if things look like getting out of control, leave the scene immediately.

This is a powerful reminder that you have control over your destiny. In martial arts, this means that the effort, discipline, and dedication you put into your training today will shape the results you see in the future.
Think of it this way: if you want to become stronger, faster, and more skilled, you need to take action now—practice your techniques, attend classes regularly, and push yourself to improve. By doing so, you are actively creating the future you desire, whether that’s earning a new belt, mastering a difficult move, or becoming more confident in your self-defense abilities.
Instead of waiting for things to happen or hoping that you’ll achieve your goals, take charge of your journey. Set your intentions, work hard, and stay committed. The future you’re aiming for isn’t something that’s just going to happen to you—it’s something you’ll build with every decision, every practice session, and every challenge you overcome.
In short, by creating your future through your actions today, you’ll ensure that you’re on the path to achieving your martial arts goals and becoming the best version of yourself.
